The iconic, family-run businesses on the boardwalk in Coney Island feared they would shut forever when the season finished this week. But it seems the developers looking to revamp one of New York's old entertainment sites might have to give the businesses there another summer, at least.

Amusement Central International, which runs the Luna Park and the boardwalk, is now renegotiating leases after the company it chose to run the proposed modern franchises on the boardwalk unexpectedly pulled out. The poor economy has been blamed.

The oldest diner on the boardwalk, Ruby's Grill, which has been serving customers since the 1930s, may well survive as long as it pledges to refurbish its premises..........

Our friend Tricia just sent us this post LIVE FROM BOARDWALK - Auction at Cha Chas. As of 4 pm they still have another hour there before moving on to other shops on boardwalk that are auctioning things off. Lots of Coney ISland Memrobilia so come on out there is still plenty of things to be auctioned off form The CI Souvenir Shop , Ruby's and More.

Ruby's is still negotiating an 8 yr lease and we will be open (weather permitting) next two weekends but why not get rid of a few things to get new?

If you can get out to the Coney Island Boardwalk in the next hour or two (it’s 3:30 now), you can bid on an authentic chair from Ruby’s Bar and Grill! Chairs and tables along with a slew of old restaurant equipment is piled up in front of the venerable Boardwalk establishment, waiting to be sold to the highest bidder. The bar is also open for business in case this news makes you want to have a drink.

Oh, and if you missed Sunday’s “last call,” you actually did............

Ruby’s which is in talks with Central Amusements to stay open, is not part of the auction, even though any deal it makes with its landlord will require it to completely refurbish its interior to class-up the place. Today at 2 pm ( viewing starts at 12:30 pm) an Auction will take place at Cha Chas bar n grill that will include several (4) boardwalk businesses item from ice machines to grills, commercial coolers as well as neon signs and lots of Coney Island Memorabilia.

Ruby's will be open on weekends only till Nov. 13th. 11 am - 8 pm Weather Permitting

On Sunday in Coney Island, we happened to take a few photos that are linked by end of season color and the melancholy passage of time. Last week, the ghost lettering of a forgotten arcade was revealed on the brick facade of the building on the Boardwalk at West 12th Street. As previously reported, Gyro Corner Clam Bar took down their signage and moved it to their second location on Coney Island’s Bowery. Gyro is one of the Mom and Pops which must vacate their longtime locations on the Boardwalk by November 4th.

Found a good article in Brooklyn Paper today regarding the stipulations for Rubys to remain. Negotations are on going with Zamperla.

“Ruby’s is in negotiations to come back, but right now it’s a coin toss,” said a source close to the negotiations, who asked remain anonymous.

The bars are being asked to spend several hundred thousand dollars on renovations, including hardwood floors and a fleet of flat-screen TVs — a move that would rip the rag-tag carney atmosphere out of places like the 77-year-old Ruby’s, which is beloved by the Coney faithful for its aging decor and honky-tonk feel."

"Bringing in Miami Beach restaurateurs and French facilities management giant Sodexo to operate in Coney Island has turned out to be a fiasco for Luna Park developer Central Amusement International. We’re just glad some of the people in charge realized Coney Island is neither Miami Beach nor a corporate cafeteria before we lost all of our original, irreplaceable businesses and ended up with a shuttered Boardwalk.

After kicking out nine Coney Island Mom and Pops from City-owned property to make way for upscale eateries, the park division of Italian ride manufacturer Zamperla is now reported to be offering multi-year leases to at least two local favorites — Paul’s Daughter and Ruby’s Bar. NY1 has learned two Coney Island boardwalk businesses that were evicted have now been asked to stay.

NEGOTIATIONS ARE ON ....................... AGAIN................. to remain in Coney Island. Zamperla tried to bring in a few people from Miami to Run a New York City Boardwalk - the Famous Coney Island Boardwalk - IT WONT WORK - WE ARE NOT MIAMI. The boardwalk here is so different in so many ways but, I'm glad they have decided to back away... for now. They are getting ready to experience there first NY Winter as a business, Coney Cones, - on the boardwalk. Winter, as we know in New York can be harsh. As we saw last year with all the snow the Parks Department doesn't even clear the boardwalk and that makes it hard for a business to open in winter.

After rudely giving them the boot, an Italian company tapped by the city to revive Coney Island will likely have to ask some longtime seaside businesses to come back — or risk a barren boardwalk, The Post has learned.

Zamperla USA had planned to replace seven boardwalk mainstays — including Ruby’s Bar and Grill — once their leases expire at the end of the month as part of a $5 million plan to create a more sanitized amusement strip. But a deal with a Miami Beach group to operate four sit-down eateries in the space appears to have fallen apart, sources said yesterday."

Just a reminder that the foreign company that now operates prime Coney Island real estate for the Bloomberg administration will soon be kicking out the last remaining Mom & Pop businesses on the boardwalk. Most beloved is Ruby's Old Tyme Bar & Grill, which has been in operation at this boardwalk location since the dark days of the early '80s. But the others that are sure to be missed include Paul’s Daughter, Cha Cha’s, Gyro Corner, Steve’s Grill House, and the Suh family’s Coney Island Souvenir Shop. The 2011 Season is coming to an end and our Dear Friend Sergio (Sam) is coming back for his annual birthday party bash at Ruby's on Oct. 1st.

As most know, Sam lives in Puerto Rico but has come to Coney every year to work for the past 60+ years. Sam retired about 4 years ago but, comes up to visit 1 day a year and this year his birthday just happens to fall on a weekend. Saturday, Oct 1st - Sam will be around Coney/Rubys all day. He usually arrives around 10 am & plans on being in Coney till 9 pm or so. Come on out and see Sam and Rubys as we remember before its gone. Oct 29th and Oct 30th is our FINAL WEEKEND on the Boardwalk.

I don't have much to say about it.

It's been here, "a Brooklyn treasure," since 1934.

After this summer, it will crumble under a corporate tsunami, along with the rest of the boardwalk.

Assuming Hurricane Irene didn't suck Zamperla out to sea, there's not much time left to say goodbye to Coney Island as we've long known it.

We all know the devastation that is coming after this summer. The company that Bloomberg has handed this city treasure over to has a vision to make the place "refined, cleaner...with sit-down restaurants and sports bars." And so everything on the boardwalk, except Nathan's and Lola Star, will be bulldozed. They want to turn it into a place where you can "sit in nice comfortable chairs and have a nice cappuccino or ice coffee."

Sitting down is key. So is niceness. "Nice" is an epidemic that's killing the city. What will "nice" look like at Coney? It's already arrived.

We've got a good idea of what's to come thanks to the new Luna Park's Cyclone Cafe. It looks like it was born from a plastics extruder, a cookie-cutter design with none of the joyful messiness of Coney's...............

B&B CAROUSEL

The B&B Carousell, which is in the process of being restored, is slated to be back in action in Coney Island in a couple of years. Three years ago the 89-year-old Bishoff & Brienstein Carousell was transported to Ohio for the restoration work following the city’s purchase of the historic ride for $1.8 million in 2005. A Brooklyn Eagle article about the carousel noted the following: “The B & B Carousell dates from 1919 and is 45 feet wide and 20 feet tall. In addition to its 50 horses, the carousel features two dragon-themed, four-seat chariots, a 66-key band organ, a brass ring machine, and original carved, painted rounding boards, mirrors and scenery panels.” A rep from the Coney Island Development Corporation says that restoration is still ongoing and “it is expected to return to Coney Island in the late spring of 2013.” You can see a short video of the work being done to the B&B here.

Maybe it’s a coincidence, but June 4 also happens to be National Drawing Day. To celebrate, Kensington-based artist Sherry Davis is throwing the Coney Island-themed Artists Day Out at Ruby’s on the Boardwalk. Artwork relevant to the area will be shown indoors and out, and artists are invited to add their mark to the fabled bar, which closes after this summer as landlord Central Park Amusement looks to expand its theme park. Just learned that our friend Shorty had just passed away in Coney Island. Shorty was known for working on most of the rides at Astroland for many years as well as helped many boardwalk businesses out when needed.

Red Hook Fest

Are you ready for the remix? On June 3 and 4, the Red Hook Fest returns to the waterfront, with two days of arts events that encourage audience participation, from photojournalism to drawing. That doesn’t mean it’s all you; performers include La Roka RPM and Full Circle, hip-hop, break-dance salsa mash up; Tato Torres y Yerbabuena, a Boricuan roots band; Paul Josephs and MetroSonics; hip-hop theater duo Climbing PoeTree; and the all-female dance collective INSPIRIT.

Bushwhack Series and Bushwick Opens Studios

It’s one mad weekend in Bushwick, with the Bushwhack Series from June 2 to 5 and the Bushwick Open Studios from June 3 to 5. The former bunkers down at the Bushwick Starr, with four days of new experimental performance art, while the latter can be found at galleries and street corners-turned-galleries all over the neighborhood. With more than 350 shows promised, they have to improvise.

ArtWalk

In Boerum Hill, ArtWalk takes over Atlantic Avenue on June 4 and 5 with art, live music and restaurant deals. Since forming six years ago, the annual arts festival has gradually spilled out into neighboring galleries and studios, with Downtown, Fort Greene, Gowanus, Cobble Hill and Brooklyn Heights hosting more than 200 artists at home studios and such diverse sites as Proteus Gowanus, the Micro Museum, Flavor Paper, the Brooklyn Ballet, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and, in a sneak preview, Roulette Brooklyn, which is opening this September.

Artists Day Out

Maybe it’s a coincidence, but June 4 also happens to be National Drawing Day. To celebrate, Kensington-based artist Sherry Davis is throwing the Coney Island-themed Artists Day Out at Ruby’s on the Boardwalk. Artwork relevant to the area will be shown indoors and out, and artists are invited to add their mark to the fabled bar, which closes after this summer as landlord Central Park Amusement looks to expand its theme park. Fittingly, artists are invited to fight the man and create a “Save Ruby’s” mural inside.

Coney Island History Project Walking Tours

The Coney Island History Project is pleased to announce a series of walking tours of the historic landmarks and current attractions of the amusement district. Beginning on Memorial Day Weekend, tours will be offered on Sundays at 12:15 pm as well as to groups by advance reservation. All tours will begin at the History Project’s new exhibition center under the Wonder Wheel’s iconic entrance sign on Denos D. Vourderis Place (West 12th Street), just a few steps off the Boardwalk.

We’re launching the season with a special walking tour in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Dreamland Fire on Friday, May 27, at 12:15 pm. This tour will be offered again on Sunday, May 29, at 12:15 pm. Led by Charles Denson, historian and director of the Coney Island History Project, the tours will also preview the History Project’s exhibition on the Dreamland Fire Centennial, set to open on Saturday, May 28, at 12 noon.

NY Smoking Ban. What Smoking Ban????

They're not exactly kicking butt.

Parks patrol officers have been told to politely enforce the new smoking ban -- and set up a system where violators essentially have to beg for a ticket before they'll be fined.

A document entitled "proper procedures to follow when you observe someone smoking on parks property" was distributed to all 125 officers.

It instructs them to "approach the individual and ask them if they are familiar with the new no-smoking rule."

Only then if the person refuses to "put out the cigarette/cigar/pipe," they get a $50 summons.

If the smoker continues to violate the law after that, then they are to write a second, $250 ticket for failure to comply with an officer.

A $64 million amphitheater project for Coney Island could be dead in the water.

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz yesterday said he's pulling his annual Seaside Summer Concert Series out of Coney Island's Asser Levy Park as the courts decide the amphitheater project's legality.

The concerts will move to a West 21st Street lot right off the boardwalk that became available after Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus dropped plans to perform there this year.

Though Tara Altebrando grew up on Staten Island and had been to Coney Island a number of times as a kid, she somehow just didn't get it. It wasn't until a friend took her there to swim as an adult that she suddenly appreciated that a mere subway ride away was an ocean, a beach and a whole lot of history.

Saturday, May 21st, Run past, alongside and through many of Brooklyn's most famous sights and attractions at this borough's leg of the New York Road Runners' Half-Marathon Grand Prix, which takes place each spring in this part of the city, just south of the island of Manhattan.

Fast and largely flat (with the exception of some hilly terrain starting in Prospect Park), the race course is made up entirely of paved city streets, starting in Prospect Park and ending at world-famous Coney Island (the site of the annual July 4th hot-dog eating contest sponsored by Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs).

For the first 3 miles, the course takes the more than 5,000 runners who compete in this event each year thru the scenic and tree lined streets of Prospect Park. From there, the course turns southward onto Ocean Parkway for the next several miles, until you turn west on Surf Ave., along Coney Island's famous boardwalk, within shouting distance of the beach made famous in Neil Simon's "Brighton Beach Memoirs."

100th Anniversary of the Dreamland Fire: Exhibition & Walking Tours

On May 27, 1911, a huge fire illuminated the sky and sent fire companies from all over Brooklyn rushing to Coney Island. Dreamland Park was ablaze. Unlike Steeplechase Park or the Bowery which were rebuilt after being destroyed by fire, Dreamland would be no more. “The catastrophic fire happened in 1911 but its lingering aftermath still affects Coney Island land use policy a century later,” said Charles Denson. “As soon as the ashes cooled, the city took over the site and has been claiming beachfront parcels ever since.”

When the Coney Island History Project opens on Memorial Day Weekend, we’ll commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Dreamland Fire with an exhibition of photos and a themed walking tour. Historic images of Dreamland before and after the fire will be juxtaposed with the site as it is today and how it developed over the last hundred years. The exhibit will be illuminated by oral history interviews with the 101-year-old son of the Coney Island police chief on duty that night and the granddaughter of the Coney Island fire chief who fought the blaze.

They want to remove Ruby's and Toms Souveiner for a new Sport Bar. Ruby's has been an establishment on the boardwalk for over 70 years. Zamperla wants a bar to be year round - ok - we can do that . They want a variety of food - if we have a bigger place - we add a kitchen, then we can have a variety but the boardwalk needs a few of the classics - besides let's be honest - part of coney is eating the bad stuff - the only time we allow ourselves treat's. Ruby's stopped doing breakfast because the need seemed to have disappeared.

Boardwalk Trash Bins

The hand painted trash bins on the Coney Island Boardwalk are no more. The Parks Dept has decided to remove all trash bins from the Coney Island Boardwalk. Part of their reasoning is the can not maneuver thru the boardwalk due to so many visitors. Especially they area from W 12th - Stillwell where the boardwalk is currently under repair construction and half the boardwalk is fenced off. During the Half Marathon on Brooklyn the Parks Dept had set up barriers that the lines from Nathans had to go toward the side and down the boardwalk instead of straight lines into the fenced area forcing a stand still on that corner to enter boardwalk W. With the barriers there people easily moved thru the fenced off section - including Parks Dept golf carts. We will no longer be in the top 12 boardwalk for all of the US we will now be the dirtiest boardwalk in US. Thanks Commissioner Julius Spiegel.

Marines Take Coney Island Beach

Thursday May 27 the Marines land on Coney Island Beach. 9 am - 12 pm. Come on out see Marines in action for a training exercise. For the demonstration, the Super Cobras will sweep the area to ensure that the landing zone is clear. The Ospreys and Sea Knight helicopters, carrying a platoon of Marines, will then fly into the landing zone. The Marines will quickly deploy from the aircraft and secure the area.

After the demonstration, the helicopters will land and be available for public display along with the weapons typically used by a Marine Corps rifle platoon.

The New Gates from Surf Ave into Luna Park. Zamperla, an Italian Amusement Park operator designer was given a 10 year contract for a new better park in Coney Island.
They are bringing in new rides, many created and built by there own factory, with old favorite names such as the Tea Cups. The park is due to open on Sat. May 29th - Monday Memorial Day then close to finish up a few things and reopen on Sat June 5th.

Save Coney Island on Rezoning Vote: ‘A Sad Day for New York City’

In response to today’s City Council vote to approve the Bloomberg administration’s flawed rezoning plan for Coney Island, grassroots activist group Save Coney Island issued the following statement from its spokesman, Juan Rivero:
This is a sad day for New York City. As a result of this rezoning, people across the city and around the world who love Coney Island could see its historic amusement district shrunk, covered up and blocked off with high-rises, its history destroyed and its potential squandered — all for nothing.

There are numerous places around the globe that have build glorious parks that pay tribute to Coney Island. Here, where we have the original, the city has been all too happy to shrink it out of existence. The City Council had an opportunity to fix this plan. Unfortunately, it chose not to do so.

This plan shrinks Coney Island’s famed amusement district, leaving behind a tiny amusement park of only 12 acres. It allows four huge high-rises — up to 27 stories tall — in the heart of the historic amusement district, walling off the beach and the rides. It invites developers to tear down Coney Island’s handful of historic buildings, including Nathan’s Famous and others that are more than a century old.
The Bloomberg administration has stubbornly ignored the appeals of the Municipal Art Society, The New York Times, Save Coney Island, longtime Astroland owner Carol Albert, Coney Island’s unofficial ‘mayor’ Dick Zigun and leading New York historians to fix its plan.

This rezoning plan will irreparably damage Coney Island. Now it’s up to the Bloomberg administration to mitigate that damage by working to increase the size of the outdoor amusement area and by preventing the construction of high-rises in the middle of the amusement district. It is our hope and expectation that it will do so.
Why would Mayor Bloomberg want his legacy to be associated with the destruction of Coney Island’s amusement district — with the destruction of this iconic place? Wouldn’t he rather go down in history as the mayor who restored Coney Island to its rightful stature, and saved it for the next generation?

If the Bloomberg administration does not have the perspective and the humility to revise its plan, this rezoning will be remembered as a disgraceful moment in the history of our city, akin to the demolition of the old Penn Station.

Friday Fireworks Nights

Friday Night Fireworks at Coney Island start June 19th at dark- 9 pm.

The Fireworks will go off every Friday, weather permitting, from June 19th thru Aug 20th. The Fireworks are sponsored by Coney Island Cyclone, Carol Albert, Deno's WOnder Wheel and The Brooklyn Cyclones. Come out to the best seat for Fireworks at Ruby's Bar & Grill where the people are hot and the beer is cold.

Mermaid Parade 2009

Once again the time is upon us for the Annual Mermaid Parade in Coney Island. Rain or shine the parade will go on starting at 2 pm from W 21st & Surf Ave to W 10th toward the boardwalk then back towards W21st. The Mermaid Parade is considered NY's Largest Art Parade and one of the best summer events not to miss.

Participants dress in hand made costumes celebrating various sea creatures. This parade is open to all ages, floats, antique cars, marching bands, drill teams and more. Visit Coney Island USA web site for more information on parade route, history etc,.

Ringling Brothers "Boom A Ring" Opening Night

The Ringling Brothers "Boom A Ring" Circus is getting ready for Opening Night on Thursday June 18th at 8pm. The Greatest Show on Earth plans an action packed seaside circus spectacular.

Thursday they kick off with a "All Access Pre-Show" FREE to ticket holders. Arrive an hour early to have access to animals, performers and learn a few tricks and skills needed to be a circus performer.

The circus is located between the Childs Building and Keyspan Ball Park from the boardwalk @ Surf Ave & 21st Street.

Sitts "Festival By The Sea" Hits Setback

This weekend, May 15th, was suppose to be Thor Equities big opening for "Festival by the Sea". The festival will open but, with only half the expected rides on W 10th as well as vendors and food carts etc. The vendors will be exposed to the elements due to the tents having problems in the last few days. This weekend with cold weather and rain predicted they will need the full tents for coverage. Easter Sunday on the Boardwalk

Ruby's Bar and Grill created a "Make Shift Bar" by the fence in front of the new slabs for the boardwalk repair project that continues in Coney Island. Easter Sunday was sunny but very chilly with winds around 25 mph. We were set up by 11 am with our first customer's (Ruby's regulars) arriving a lil after noon to start celebrating Ruby's returning for another season. The crowd on the boardwalk was lite compared to previous years. Ruby's stayed opened for about 3 hours. Hopefully this week will be a productive one and next weekend we can have an "Official Opening" inside Ruby's.

Ruby's Still Watiting for Lease

Ruby's Bar and Grill is still waiting on a lease for 2009 season. Negotiations have been on going with Thor Equities. The boardwalk in front of Ruby's is due to be completed by Easter Sunday. Hopefully, an agreement can be reached by next weekend.

The Cyclone 2009 Opening Day

The sun arose warming the tracks as the Cyclone awakened from its winter sleep to roar once again on opening day at Coney Island. The Hungarian band played as the beautiful Miss Cyclone, lead them to the Cyclone's feet. For many New Yorkers riding the Cyclone is a sign that summer is coming. The first car at noon roared up the hill to unleash it's power to the delightful screams of the first riders. "What a glorious beautiful day" had been heard by passerbys surprised to the see the wooden roller coaster still operating after hearing last summer that Astroland had closed it gates for good on Sept 7th, many thought that meant all of Coney Island was closed.

Many New Yorkers came to Coney Island to see for themselves if it had closed. The boardwalk busseled with people eating Nathans Hot Dogs viewing the closed in area that still surrounds Cha Cha's, Ruby's and the Gyro as the Parks Dept tries to finish that section of the boardwalk by Easter Sunday. Deno's Wonder Wheel spun to life to the delightful laughs of children playing in the kiddie park below.

Coney Island is very much alive for the summer of 2009. As Thor Equities moves forward on their plans for redevelopment for the area the history, charm and quirkiness of Coney Island lives on.
